What is Labradorite?

Labradorite was first discovered on the Isle of Paul, near Nain, Labrador, Canada. It is the provincial mineral of Newfoundland and Labrador. True Labradorite has unique characteristics that are intrinsic to the contemplative nature of the Mindful Maple Leaf™. Each Mindful Maple leaf™ is cut in Labradorite stone handpicked by Indigenous artisans, carefully revealing the form and reflective colour within the stone. True Labradorite reveals its colour upon illumination, with hues dynamically changing with the movement of light and stone. It reflects the colours of the Northern Lights, an important reminder of the mindfulness and cultural significance of the stone.

The Labradorite Legend, The Spirit Of The Mindful Maple Leaf™

According to Inuit Legend, a strong and mighty Shaman was frightened by the appearance of the Northern Lights high in the night sky. Believing they were evil spirits; he was determined to defeat them. After a long struggle, he was able to grab some, and using his powerful magic, he cast them into the stone thus entombing and capturing the beauty of the Aurora Borealis for eternity. It is said that if you whistle at the Northern Lights, the evil spirits will return.

The Inuit believe that true Labradorite holds the powers of the Shaman that captured it and reminds them that their culture is strong and resilient in the face of obstacles.

Each Mindful Maple Leaf™ is sourced and hand-carved by an Indigenous Artisan into a one-of-a-kind creation born from the legend of the Northern Lights.

Mindful Maple Leaf™ Pocket Stone

SimpliCanada and
Great Caribou Studio

With the founding of SimpliCanada, an e-commerce and marketing platform that focuses on the promotion and marketing of Canadian-made products and services nationally and internationally, the Founders decided they would develop a product that would embody the mindfulness ethos they wished to be a guiding principle of the company. They struck upon the idea of the Mindful Maple Leaf™ Pocket Stone and knew this had to be made in collaboration with Indigenous Artisans. After much research, SimpliCanada reached out to the Indigenous Artisans and Carvers of the Great Caribou Studio, located in Mary’s Harbour, NL.

Great Caribou Studio was born out of a love of Indigenous fine arts & crafts. The Studio is part of the Economusee (first Indigenous Economusee in the world) Network, representing the highest standard of Indigenous Artisan Craft possible.
